Op 3 juli 1973 verraste rockicoon David Bowie zijn fans en band met de aankondiging dat hij die avond zijn laatste concert zou geven. Bowie zou natuurlijk nog optreden, maar nooit meer als Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Documentairemaker D.A. Pennebaker (MONTEREY POP, DON’T LOOK BACK) was in Londen om een dertig minuten durende special van Bowie’s show op te nemen, maar geraakte zo in de ban van de performer dat hij ter plekke besloot een langere film te maken.

On July 3, 1973, rock icon David Bowie surprised his fans and band by announcing that he would perform his last concert that night. Bowie would still perform, of course, but never again as Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker (MONTEREY POP, DON’T’ LOOK BACK) was in London to record a thirty-minute special of Bowie’s show but became so captivated by the performer that he decided on the spot to make a longer film.

ZIGGY STARDUST is a stunning document of a rock icon in his early years and one of the very first concert films. There are many insightful behind-the-scenes moments, but the bulk of the film is the concert itself with numerous songs, including Ziggy Stardust, Space Oddity, Suffragette City, Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide, Changes, Time, All the Young Dudes, Lou Reed’s White Light/White Heat and Jagger/Richards’ Let’s Spend the Night Together. This cinematic collage of kitsch, pop irony, and flamboyant excess aptly demonstrates the musical symbiosis of passion and dominance that defined Bowie’s queer art and the glam rock genre.
